Where do vegans get their … ?

Being vegan or vegetarian is so foreign to some of us that we have no idea what the concept involves or how it can possibly be healthy to cut out whole food groups from the diet. When we are brought up in a society that tells us we need meat for protein and iron, dairy for calcium and fish for omega 3s, it’s not hard to see why we would be skeptical of making the switch to eating purely plants. But what they don’t teach us at school or in food industry-sponsored marketing is that these nutrients can easily be obtained from plant-based sources.

Here is a list of what to include in your diet if you’re worried about becoming deficient in any of these nutrients.

Sugar

SugarOkay, this is a blog about Gluten Free Vegan Living!  What does that have to do with Sugar?  Well, quite a bit actually.  You can eat a complete diet of Gluten Free Vegan food, but if it is filled with high amounts of sugar, you are doing yourself and your body a great disservice!

Lindsey, from one of my favorite blogs, Happy Herbivore, gives us some interesting suggestions and healthy substitutions for sugar.  Read on ….

What is sugar?

According to wikipedia, “sugar is the generalized name for a class of sweet-flavored substances used as food.” There are various types of sugar, derived from different sources. For example, date sugar comes from dates, beet sugar from beets, and the sugar most of us think of when we hear the word “sugar” comes from sugar cane.

Lisa asked, “How is confectioners sugar and brown sugar okay to eat, but white sugar is not?”

Gluten Attacks the Brain

Gluten Attacks the BrainGluten can cause multiple damage to your body if you have an intolerance.  What most people don’t realize is that the second place it attacks, after the gastrointestinal system, is the brain and nervous system.

This was eye opening for me when I was diagnosed as I was being treated for early stages of Alzheimers disease.  The thought never occurred to us, nor our medical doctor, that Gluten could be the culprit.

Because of my history, I can relate to many of the symptoms listed in the article below:

Approximately 10 percent of people with Celiac disease develop neurologic symptoms, according to the Center for Peripheral Neuropathy. Gluten ataxia specifically describes a neurologic condition caused by a gluten sensitivity that leads to a wide range of symptoms, including:

• Difficultly concentrating
• Loss of balance
• Frequent falls

Vegan for Athletes

Much controversy on whether a Athletes can eat a Vegan diet.  Most Athletes, as we know, desire a high protein diet — so they generally eat lots of meat products.  But can Athletes be Vegan and get the high protein they need.

Read this article and decide for yourself:

How to be a Vegan Athlete

Athletes are often hesitant to give up animal products because they contain large amounts of protein, zinc, iron, and vitamin B, nutrients that aren’t as easily found in plants. It’s true that plant foods carry less of these nutrients than meat and dairy, and if you don’t consume them in large enough quantities you can feel lethargic and your athletic performance can suffer. However, just because plant foods in general have these nutrients in smaller quantities than animal products doesn’t mean there aren’t some foods that are excellent sources of these nutrients that are also easily attainable.

The truth is that any natural food has to have some protein, and if you consume enough whole food calories to sustain yourself, you’ll most likely get enough protein in your diet. And if you need additional supplementation, foods like spirulina, hemp, and beans are great sources of protein that also have a good amino acid profile, similar to whey.

Anyone who has doubts about the ability to consume large amounts of protein on a specialty diets should look no further than the latest trend among bodybuilders: going vegan. Athletes like Robert Cheeke have amassed large followings by demonstrating how possible it is to accomplish extraordinary acts of strength and might with only eating plants. One of my favorite athletes of all-time is Jack LaLanne, the father of modern fitness. He won a Mr. Universe competition and didn’t eat meat.
